AEO (answer engine optimization)

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of structuring and publishing content so that AI-powered answer engines — such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode — retrieve it, quote it accurately and cite the source when answering user questions.

Classic SEO competes for a position in a list of links; AEO competes to be the sentence inside the answer. That difference changes what good content looks like. Answer engines assemble responses by retrieving passages and synthesising them, so they reward material that is self-contained at the passage level: a clear question-shaped heading, a direct one-sentence answer immediately beneath it, then supporting detail. Content that buries the answer under three paragraphs of preamble can rank perfectly well in search and still never get quoted.

The practical toolkit overlaps with SEO but is not identical. Structured data (FAQPage, Article, HowTo, Organization, Breadcrumb) helps machines parse your claims and entities. Explicit, verifiable facts — numbers, dates, definitions — get cited far more readily than vague marketing language, and unsupported claims get filtered out. Consistent entity information across your own site, third-party profiles and public directories strengthens the association between your brand and the topics you want to be cited on. An llms.txt file and clean, crawlable HTML help retrieval systems find and read you. And because most answer engines summarise several sources at once, being one of a few credible corroborating pages often matters more than being the single top-ranked one.

Measurement is genuinely harder than SEO. Answer engines mostly do not pass referrer data in a way analytics tools attribute cleanly, and impressions inside an AI answer are largely invisible. Serious teams track it indirectly: brand and direct traffic trends, referrals from known AI domains, share of citations measured by repeatedly querying the engines themselves for target questions, and downstream signals such as sign-ups that name an AI assistant as the source.

This glossary is itself AEO in practice — short quotable definitions, question-shaped headings and structured data, published so an answer engine can lift a correct sentence instead of paraphrasing a guess. Opus Growth applies the same thinking to advertising work: the connector reports what your search and organic data actually says through Search Console, GA4 and YouTube tools, so content decisions rest on your own numbers rather than assumptions.

Frequently asked questions

No. AEO builds on the same technical foundations — crawlability, authority, accurate content — but optimises for being quoted inside an AI-generated answer rather than ranking in a list of links. Most teams run both together.

There is no complete dashboard. The usual approach combines repeatedly querying the engines for your target questions and logging whether you appear, monitoring referral traffic from known AI domains, and watching brand and direct traffic trends.

Passages that answer a specific question in one clear, self-contained sentence, placed directly under a heading that mirrors how people ask that question, with verifiable specifics rather than promotional language.
