Conversion tracking

Conversion tracking is the practice of recording the valuable actions people take after interacting with an ad — such as a purchase, lead form submission, phone call or app install — and attributing those actions back to the campaign, ad group and keyword that produced them.

Mechanically, it works by placing a tag or SDK on the destination — a website, app or call-forwarding number — that fires when the defined action occurs and reports it back to the ad platform along with an identifier from the original click. In Google Ads that identifier is the GCLID, in Microsoft Advertising the MSCLKID, in Meta the fbclid plus Pixel or Conversions API events. Server-side options (Google's Enhanced Conversions, Meta's Conversions API, offline conversion imports from a CRM) increasingly supplement browser tags, because cookie restrictions and ad blockers erode client-side measurement.

Conversion tracking is not just reporting; it is the fuel for automated bidding. Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximise Conversions and Performance Max all learn from the conversion signal you send them. If your conversion actions are miscounted, double-fired, or set to treat every micro-action as equal, automation optimises confidently towards the wrong outcome. This is why serious accounts separate primary conversions (the ones bidding optimises for) from secondary ones (tracked for insight only), assign realistic values rather than a flat 1, and choose counting rules deliberately: 'every' for e-commerce purchases, 'one' for lead generation.

The common failure modes are worth memorising: tags on a thank-you page that users can reload; the same action counted both natively and via an analytics import, inflating totals; attribution windows and models that differ between platforms so numbers never reconcile; and offline sales that never make it back into the system, which quietly makes high-value channels look unprofitable.

Opus Growth exposes conversion configuration directly through the connector — you can inspect, create and adjust conversion actions in Google Ads conversationally instead of clicking through settings screens. Every change is shown first as a dry run with the exact before-and-after, and applied only after you approve it. That matters here, because a mistimed edit to a primary conversion action can disrupt bidding across an entire account.

Frequently asked questions

A click is someone selecting your ad. A conversion is a defined valuable action they complete afterwards, such as buying, submitting a form or calling. Clicks measure interest; conversions measure outcomes.

Because they use different attribution models, different lookback windows and different definitions of a session. Ad platforms credit the click that led to the conversion within their own window; analytics tools often use last non-direct or data-driven attribution across all channels.

Effectively yes. Strategies such as Target CPA and Target ROAS learn from conversion data, and without a reliable, correctly valued signal they will optimise towards a misleading target.
