Performance Max (PMax)
Performance Max (PMax) is a goal-based Google Ads campaign type that uses a single campaign to serve ads across all Google inventory — Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps — with automated bidding, targeting and asset combinations driven by the advertiser's conversion goals.
Instead of building separate Search, Shopping and Display campaigns, you give PMax a conversion goal, a budget, a bidding strategy (Maximize Conversions or Maximize Conversion Value, optionally with a tCPA or tROAS target) and one or more asset groups. An asset group holds headlines, descriptions, images, logos, videos and optionally a product feed, plus an audience signal — a set of first-party lists, custom segments and demographics that tells the system where to start looking rather than a hard targeting rule. Google's models then assemble and place ads across channels wherever they predict a conversion.
The trade is control for reach. You cannot choose placements per channel, and reporting is thinner than in classic campaigns: search themes and asset-group performance are visible, but channel-level breakdowns and full search-term data are limited. Practical levers that remain are budget, bidding targets, asset quality and quantity, audience signals, brand exclusions, account-level and campaign-level negative keywords, location and language settings, and the structure of your asset groups and listing groups. Feed quality does much of the heavy lifting for retail: titles, images, GTINs and product-level segmentation move performance more than most in-platform tweaks.
Two recurring issues deserve attention. First, cannibalization — PMax will happily serve on brand queries and absorb traffic your Search campaigns would have won at lower cost, which is why brand exclusions and clean measurement matter before you judge incremental value. Second, conversion setup: because bidding is fully automated toward whatever you declare as the goal, a campaign optimizing to a low-value action like a page view will scale that action efficiently and produce nothing of business value. Give the campaign a real learning window — typically several weeks — and avoid mid-flight asset overhauls that reset it.
Opus Growth includes dedicated PMax tools among its 69 Google Ads actions: create a Performance Max campaign, update asset groups, add images and other assets, adjust budgets and bidding targets, and manage account-level negatives — all conversationally, all with a dry-run preview you approve before it touches the live account.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Use brand exclusions on the campaign and account-level negative keyword lists to keep PMax off brand queries, then compare incremental performance against your dedicated brand Search campaign.
Less than classic campaigns. You get asset-group and search-theme insights, asset performance ratings and conversion data, but limited channel-level breakdowns and only partial search-term visibility, so plan measurement with that constraint in mind.
Not automatically. Many accounts run PMax alongside a tightly managed brand Search campaign and high-intent non-brand Search, using PMax to expand reach across the remaining inventory rather than as a full replacement.
