Check auto-tagging and URL parameters so GA4 shows your Google Ads traffic correctly

Collects tracking templates, URL suffixes and hand-written utm parameters in final URLs at account, campaign, ad group and ad level into one table, then checks which channel and source those clicks land under in GA4.

When to use it

When Google ad traffic in GA4 does not match Google Ads, when the same campaigns show up under different source names in reports, or when you take over an account and do not know how its URL settings were built.

What you get

Two tables showing the URL settings at four levels and how they appear in GA4, one tracking standard for the account and campaign template fixes applied only after your approval.

Does it change anything in my account?

Only with your approval. The assistant first shows a preview of every change and waits for your go-ahead.

[account name][GA4 property]
Check whether clicks from my Google Ads account [account name] show up with the right source in my GA4 property [GA4 property]. URL settings at account, campaign, ad group and ad level can override each other, so I want to see all of them in one table. 1. Account level. With google_ads_query, read auto_tagging_enabled, tracking_url_template and final_url_suffix from the customer resource. 2. Campaign and ad group level. With google_ads_query, pull tracking_url_template, final_url_suffix and url_custom_parameters for every campaign that is not removed, then the same fields from the ad_group resource. 3. Ad level. With google_ads_query, pull final_urls, tracking_url_template and final_url_suffix for ads that are not removed from ad_group_ad. Pick out any utm_ parameters written by hand into the final URL. 4. GA4 side. Find the property with ga4_list_properties and check with ga4_list_ads_links whether it is linked to this Google Ads account. Pull the last 28 days with ga4_report using dimension=channel and dimension2=source_medium. Find the rows where Google ad traffic shows up: google / cpc, hand-written utm_medium values, or rows that come from Google but land in a channel other than Paid Search. Flag the following: 1. If auto-tagging is off, that is the top finding, because click matching between Google Ads and GA4 and conversion imports depend on the gclid. 2. Some campaigns having a tracking template and others not, or the same account using different utm_source, utm_medium or utm_campaign rules. 3. utm parameters written into final URLs that break the account rule (for example utm_medium=paid while other campaigns use cpc). These can split reports for the same channel. 4. A tracking template without {lpurl}, or a template that points to a redirect domain. 5. If GA4 is not linked to Google Ads, note it separately, because GA4 then cannot receive Google Ads campaign and cost data. 6. A gap of more than 30% between google / cpc sessions in GA4 and clicks in Google Ads. List the likely reasons but do not settle on a single one, and note that a click and a session are not the same thing. Format the output like this: first a table by level (level, item, tracking template, suffix, utm in final URL, finding), then a table of Google ad traffic in GA4 (channel, source / medium, sessions, key events), and finally one standard: which template belongs at which level. To fix a campaign-level tracking template, use manage_campaign_settings: pass the new template in tracking_url_template, preview with confirm=false first, wait for my approval, apply it and confirm by reading it back with google_ads_query. Give me the utm clean-up in ad final URLs and any account or ad group suffixes as a to-do list; do not change those yourself, because editing an ad's final URL sends it back to review.

Example result

An example of the output this prompt produces. Its structure comes from the tools' real output; numbers and names are fictional.

Example output (based on a fictional account, not real customer data)

Auto-tagging: on. No template or suffix at account level. GA4 link to Google Ads: none.

Google Ads shows 1,180 clicks in 30 days, GA4 shows 312 google / cpc sessions. The gap is above 30%; likely reasons: the missing GA4 link, visitors leaving before the page loads, visits where cookie consent was declined.

Recommended standard: the same campaign template on every campaign, no utm in final URLs. A template preview for Search Competitor is ready and waiting for your approval.
