Account audits

Map which conversions each campaign really bids for

Combines account-level conversion goals, campaign-specific goal settings and custom goals to show which actions each campaign is optimising for in Smart Bidding. Flags campaigns that leave your most valuable conversion out of bidding.

When to use it

When you suspect your Smart Bidding campaigns are not optimising for the conversion you expect, or when you take over an account and want to see how goals were set campaign by campaign.

What you get

A map of the categories and actions each campaign bids on, a list of campaigns that depart from the account default and fix recommendations ranked by importance. Nothing in the account changes.

Does it change anything in my account?

No. The assistant only reads your data and reports back.

[account name][main conversion, e.g. form submission][main conversion]
In my Google Ads account [account name], work out which conversions each campaign targets in Smart Bidding. I want to see whether the account-level goals are overridden in some campaigns by campaign-specific goals or custom goals. The conversion that matters most to our business is: [main conversion, e.g. form submission]. This is a read-only review, do not change anything. 1. Account goals. With list_conversion_goals, list which category and origin pairs are primary (biddable) at account level. 2. Campaign setting. With google_ads_query, pull goal_config_level and custom_conversion_goal for every campaign from conversion_goal_campaign_config. CUSTOMER means the campaign uses the account goals, CAMPAIGN means a campaign-specific goal selection was made. 3. Goals per campaign. With google_ads_query, pull category, origin and biddable for every campaign from campaign_conversion_goal, leaving out removed campaigns. 4. Custom goals. With list_custom_conversion_goals, list the custom goals, the conversion actions inside each one and the campaigns using them. 5. Action level. With list_conversion_actions, get each action's category, whether it is included in the Conversions column (included_in_conversions) and its counting type. This shows which actions actually enter bidding when a category is primary. 6. What gets recorded. With google_ads_query, pull the last 30 days by campaign and segments.conversion_action_name (metrics.conversions and metrics.all_conversions). Show which actions make up each campaign's Conversions number. Give the date range with BETWEEN and explicit dates. Flag the following: 1. Campaigns that run on goals different from the account default, and what the difference is. 2. Campaigns that leave [main conversion] out of bidding. 3. Lead generation campaigns that make the purchase or revenue category primary and so bid on actions in that category counted as "every" (MANY_PER_CLICK). 4. Campaigns that count low-value actions such as video views, channel subscriptions or Business Profile engagement as primary. 5. Smart Bidding campaigns that recorded no conversion in their biddable categories in the last 30 days. Format the output like this: a map table with one row per campaign: campaign, bidding strategy, goal level (account, campaign, custom goal), biddable categories, biddable actions, biddable conversions in the last 30 days, finding. Then fix recommendations in order of importance. Do not apply anything; if a change is needed, list which goal in which campaign should move to which role, and note that it may send Smart Bidding back into learning.

Example output (based on a fictional account, not real customer data)

Account default: "Submit lead form / WEBSITE" is primary, "Purchase / WEBSITE" and the YouTube categories are secondary.

Search ServicesTarget CPAAccountSubmit lead formQuote Form42OK
Demand Gen AwarenessMaximize conversionsCampaignSubmit lead form, PurchaseQuote Form, Package Purchase (every)0Differs from account; purchase counts "every"

Fix recommendations
1. Add the Quote Form action to the "All Contacts" custom goal on Performance Max, or move the campaign back to account goals. The main conversion currently does not enter bidding at all.
2. Make the Purchase category secondary on Demand Gen Awareness. With zero biddable conversions in 30 days, Smart Bidding cannot learn right now.
3. Both changes may send the campaigns back into learning; avoid other bid changes in the same week.
