Plan a data exclusion after a conversion tracking outage to protect Smart Bidding

Proves with daily data which days tracking was broken, separates the Smart Bidding campaigns that were affected and prepares the exact data exclusion to enter in the Google Ads interface.

When to use it

When a site or tag change broke conversion tracking for a few days and you want to stop Smart Bidding from learning the wrong lesson from the missing data.

What you get

A timeline of the outage days with expected versus recorded conversions, the list of affected Smart Bidding campaigns and a data exclusion definition ready to enter in the Google Ads interface.

Does it change anything in my account?

No. The assistant only reads your data and reports back.

[account name][start date][end date]
In my Google Ads account [account name] conversion tracking may have been broken between [start date] and [end date], and the problem is now fixed. Smart Bidding may have read the missing conversions as a real drop and pulled bids down. Prove with data which days and which campaigns were affected, then prepare the data exclusion that should be added. This is a read-only review, do not change anything. 1. Read the measurement status. Use conversion_tracking_health and list_conversion_actions to list the actions included in the Conversions column and any that recorded nothing in the last 30 days. Get the account time zone (customer.time_zone) from the customer resource with google_ads_query. 2. Find the outage in daily data. With google_ads_query, pull daily clicks and cost, plus metrics.all_conversions segmented by segments.date and segments.conversion_action_name, from 28 days before my range up to today. Give the date range with BETWEEN and explicit dates. Use the conversions per click of the 28 days before the range as the baseline and compute the expected conversions for each day (clicks times baseline rate). Flag consecutive days where recorded conversions are below 30% of expected as the outage. If the expected total across those days is below 5 conversions, there is not enough data to prove an outage; say so plainly and do not recommend an exclusion. 3. Match the cause to the timeline. With google_ads_query, pull campaign, budget and ad changes for the same period from change_event (change_date_time, change_resource_type, user_email, client_type). Google keeps only the last 30 days in this resource, requires a LIMIT and does not record conversion action edits there. So do not look for the conversion side in the change history; match it against the action statuses from step 1 and the date of any site or tag change you ask me about. 4. Check what is already set. Read the bidding_data_exclusion and bidding_seasonality_adjustment resources with google_ads_query. If an exclusion already covers those days, do not propose another one. 5. Separate the affected campaigns. Get each campaign's bidding strategy with account_snapshot. Only campaigns on conversion-based Smart Bidding (Maximize conversions, Maximize conversion value, Target CPA, Target ROAS) are affected. Show Manual CPC and Maximize clicks campaigns in the table separately, but do not propose an exclusion for them. Format the output like this: 1. Outage timeline: date, clicks, expected conversions, recorded conversions, gap. 2. Affected campaigns table: campaign, bidding strategy, cost during the outage days, estimated lost conversions, exclusion needed. 3. The exact data exclusion to add: name, start and end date and time (in the account time zone), scope (selected campaigns or channel type) and devices. No tool can create a data exclusion, so write it in a form I can enter by hand under the advanced controls of bid strategies in the Google Ads interface. 4. The exclusion should cover only the days that were really broken, not my whole range. If the outage is longer than two weeks, say so separately, because excluding such a long period also removes data Smart Bidding could learn from; in that case discuss temporarily reviewing targets as an option next to the exclusion.
