Additional Phone Numbers on Google Business Profile: Keep the Extras When the Main Number Changes
A Google Business Profile can hold one primary number and up to two additional numbers. This post explains how to manage the extras from the chat, why they are now kept when the primary number changes, and what Google recommends if you use a call tracking number.
A Google Business Profile can hold one primary phone number and up to two additional numbers shown beneath it. Most businesses only fill in the primary number. Yet showing a landline and a mobile, or a general line and a booking line, makes it easier for callers to reach the right place.
We shipped a fix and a new capability for this field in Opus Growth. This post covers what changed, when additional numbers help, and what to watch for if you use call tracking.
What changed
Google stores phone numbers as a single block: the primary number and the extras together. Previously, when you updated only the primary number from the chat, the additional numbers were silently removed, because the update contained only the primary number. Reading or writing additional numbers was not possible either.
Three things are different now:
- Changing the primary number keeps the extras. Opus Growth first reads the numbers currently on the profile, updates only the part you change and writes the rest back as it was.
- Additional numbers are read. When you ask for profile details, the additional numbers come back next to the primary one.
- Additional numbers are written. You can add, change or remove them entirely. You see a preview before each change, and nothing is written to the profile until you approve it.
How to do it from the chat
Tell your assistant "Add 555 0100 as an additional number on my business profile." A list of additional numbers replaces the current extras, so if you want two numbers, give both at once. To remove all additional numbers, say "remove the additional numbers" and the primary number stays in place.
When an additional number helps
- Landline and mobile. For businesses where the landline is staffed during opening hours and a mobile is on in the evening or at weekends.
- A separate booking line. For clinics, salons and service shops that work by appointment, separating the booking line from the general line.
- Call tracking. If you use a tracking number for ads or for the profile (more on this below).
If you use a call tracking number
Google's own recommendation is to enter the tracking number as the primary number and the business's real number as an additional number. That way Google can still confirm the number belongs to the business, and the link to the number on your website and in directories stays intact. Making the tracking number primary without entering the real number at all weakens the consistency of your business information.
This is why the fix matters: when you write a tracking number into the primary field, the real number stays in place as an additional number and you do not have to enter it again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you have two phone numbers on a Google Business Profile?
Yes. You can enter one primary number and up to two additional numbers. Google usually features the primary number in Search and Maps, and the extras appear in the profile details.
Can two businesses have the same phone number on Google?
They can, but it is not recommended. Google may treat profiles with the same number as one business and merge them, or flag one as suspicious. Each business should have its own number.
Why am I not able to add a phone number in Google Business?
The most common reason is format. Enter the number in full, with the country code or in local format, without stray characters. If the profile is awaiting verification or suspended, some fields may be locked.
Will changing the primary number delete the additional numbers?
Not if you change it through Opus Growth. The existing additional numbers are read and kept as they are.
